Arms Around Her
00:55
|
|||
Dispassion
For the hardwood floors
The table settings
And the cane chairs
Dispassion
Letting blood is not enough
Nor whiskey
Nor arms around her…

Grace
03:48
|
|||
Grace has seen a thing she cannot shake
The black lake
Vast and even, endless
The cedar pines in the corners of her mind bear away
In silent witness
Wake or sleep, she’s somewhere in between
The fading green, the flashing forest
Life’s extraordinary, it’s final coldness
Deliberate
Dispassion
Highways turn to backwoods roads
Grace drives on alone, she thinks of passion, passion
It is not tongues, it is not touch, it’s not a quickened pulse
Not inflammation
It’s seeing in another’s eyes
An endless lake you recognize
Grace has seen a thing she cannot shake
The black lake
Vast and even, endless
And everything can go up in flames, it will not change
It will not change
Grace has seen
Grace has seen
Everything can go up in flames, it will not change
It will not change
It will not

Great House of Embers
04:22
|
|||
Great house of embers
The clocks all run backwards
The hallways have corners ‘round every bend
House of pretenders, the windows have shutters
The rugs running underneath need a good mend
Watch who you speak to
You know they’re watching you
Your current location is tracked by your phone
And all of your nightmares are coming true somewhere
You might find out how if they get you alone
Oh, the racket is loud, the current is strong
Feels like we’d rather die high on this hill than admit we went wrong
The forests burn, the waters rise
And we’re trapped inside
Staircase to nowhere
Make jobs through warfare
Build all the guns that your money can buy
Aim for your neighbors, say you’re their saviors
Trigger the button while closing your eyes
Oh, we have gone wrong, we’re running on fumes
Sowing distraction to keep us from action is part of the ruse
Break down the doors, and shatter the glass
While we still have a chance
The walls are caving now, the ceiling’s coming down
And those who claim otherwise are willfully blind
We play by money rules, unusual and cruel
Pay with the health of our bodies and minds
Oh, the embers burn low
What kind of world will we leave when we go
Water to drink, and clean air to breathe
Who will be left
to walk the earth free

Black Hole
03:39
|
|||
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
You got a plant on the inside
(She’s a false paradise, there’s a price)
Bought you a drink on a stolen credit card
Opened your mouth, made you taste the stars
(She’s a trip, it’s a trance, wild card)
Everybody knows — she’s a black hole
Now she lives at your place, occupies the living room
Love makes you blind, makes you play the fool
Friends of yours see her out on Friday night
Telling you, it’s going down with other guys
(Listen up, let’s get real, use your eyes)
Everybody knows —
She’ll take all your money, all your friends
She’ll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends,
She'll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends,
She'll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends,
She'll make you beg—
She’s a black hole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole
Scamming you to get where she wants to go
Bags of cash to the stores on Rodeo
Builds herself on the backs of all your friends
Tells you it’s better if you don’t see them
Free yourself, cut her off and don’t look back
This isn’t love, it’s a cruel, cold attack
Ask me how I know the story’s end
Long ago, she and I shared a bed…
And that’s how I know —
She’ll take all your money, all your friends
She’ll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends
She’ll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends
She’ll make you beg to eat out of her hand
All your money, all your friends,
She'll make you beg —
She’s a black hole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole
No heart, no soul, black hole, take it all
Black hole, she’s a black hole, ho-o-o-ole

Carrie
04:08
|
|||
Carrie Ann’s got a winner’s smile
She makes the whole world light up singing
Every Sunday morn, with her patent shoes on
Pressing the pedals of the organ at St. Peter’s
Preacher says we should bide our time
No need to hurry our way to the afterlife
Carrie drops her coins in collection when it comes around
Day turns to eve like water to wine
Heavy and hot as the Fourth of July
Carrie guns the engine, racing towards the setting sun
Luck remembers no one, remembers no one
She pulls up on the gravel drive
Knocks on the door marked “Shorty’s” and steps inside
There’s the preacher sitting with St. Peter’s Choir
Everybody playing cards and drinking
Hear her name rumble through the crowd
She took the pot last weekend, cleaned ‘em out
Carrie’s coins ring loud as her stacks grow tall on the table
Out comes the draw and it’s three of a kind
She looks the preacher dead in the eye
Carrie’s not one to call a match before it’s done
Luck remembers no one, remember —
You’ve got a dealer, maybe a partner
But you remember, luck won’t remember you
So try the new step, or take the safe bet
No matter the hand, the world carries on
Wistful in stillness, or rosy as the early dawn
She drives home with her pockets large
Another night of showing them who’s in charge
As she lays her head on the farmhouse bed
Through her ears, the words are always ringing
Winners will come, and one day they’ll go
A memory, a name that somebody knows
Carrie’s found the truth in 90 years around the sun
Luck remember no one, remembers no one

Autumn
03:03
|
|||
Autumn came by unannounced
Swept into the house
That morning
Summer may seem endless
Every moment restless
The gloom of lonely hours just a memory
I sat in the garden
Let my dreams go walking
That morning
Felt to fullest measure
Pain and deepest pleasure
Those old haunted alleys where we wander
Slow as a smile ‘cross the face of my lover
The warm, liquid sun
That touches me is gone again
It never seems
To linger
Long enough
Dawn appears in silver
Sudden and familiar
Each morning
Days are unrelenting
Grey as summer’s ending
And all of us are asked for perseverance
Slow as a smile ‘cross the face of my lover
Summer takes a bow
And all I want’s to hold you now
Love never seems
To linger
It never seems to linger
Love never seems to linger
Long enough

Starlight
04:19
|
|||
It’s midnight
And you haven’t called
Don’t know why I still wait up
Hoping that tonight
Will be the night you realize you love me
Each sundown sets my heart astir
And starlight makes me yearn for you
Maybe tonight
Will be the night you realize you love me
Is it so wrong
Is it so tough
Is it so hard for you
To have all my love
Maybe tonight, with all its charm
Will send you straight into my arms
You’ll kiss me
We’ll reach heights unknown
Those hidden places lovers go
On the night you
Realize you love me
Is it so wrong
Is it so tough
Is it so hard for you
To have all my love
Maybe tonight, with all its charm
Will send you straight into my arms
You’ll kiss me
We’ll reach heights unknown
Those hidden places lovers go
On the night you
Realize you
On the night you
Realize you
On the night you realize
You love me

Fantasies
04:08
|
|||
Woke up this morning, quarter to 10
Couldn't help feeling, you’re visiting me again
Dusted the corners, wiped out my eyes
Looked out the window for the millionth time
Called up my mother, asked her what's new
Lillies are dying but the crocuses are in bloom
Life is a puzzle, riddled with doubt
Never could manage to figure it out
The world has become a memory
of a better time, when I had your hand to hold
and all my dreams are fantasies
of the day I'm no longer alone
Tap on my window
knock on my door
tell me you're looking
for something more, close
as a whisper
Endless and sweet
Somehow forever
Outside of our reach
Visions of others follow me home
ghosts of past lovers, and people I've known
Long to be near them, feel them with me
Still, after sundown, they'll live in my dreams
The world has become a memory
of a better time, when I had your hand to hold
and all my dreams are fantasies
of the day I'm no longer alone
Alone
Alone
Alone

Mary Awakens
03:44
|
|||
Mary awakens
She arms herself with thimble and thread
Evening slumber shaken
She searches the shadows at the foot of her bed
She’s having visions
Flashing silver needles on her Singer machine
The reservoir rising
Sweet water washing everything clean
The sun spills open
Stitching across a gossamer sky
And in the reckless meadow
The does weave their way through the clearings of pine
And on they travel
Circling the hoop of the holy scene
As one with the wild
And all this life pretends to be
Mary awakens
(Mary wake up)
Gone is her fear, and gone is her fright
(Goodbye fright)
All her life is waiting on the other side
Mary awakens
The past is just a lullaby
(Lullaby)
All her life is waiting on the other side
The other side
[Voice of Mary Frances Ambrose]
“Looking out from the house that Dad built for Mom
You can see the barn / It needs a coat of paint
Lots of green fields, and green trees
Green grass in Ohio, everywhere
God’s green earth
I remember being here so many times during my life
Just keep going and you’ll be there!
It always looks different / and somehow the same
But perhaps it is I who have changed.”
Mary awakens
(Mary wake up)
Gone is her fear, and gone is her fright
(Goodbye fright)
All her life is waiting on the other side
Mary awakens
The past is just a lullaby
(Lullaby)
And all her life is waiting on the other side
On the other
The other side
